Mobile Dental Unit

Christ Our Savior Anglican Church and other churches belonging to Torrance Outreach United for Community Health (TOUCH), along with its medical partner Medical Mission Adventures (MMA), regularly serve South Bay neighbors in need with free medical, dental and optical care.

Christ Our Savior’s Thomas Winfrey said, “TOUCH and MMA have high hopes our Dec. 7 fundraiser will raise $15,000 to purchase a mobile dental unit for MMA and to continue other critical health services at clinics held at Harbor and other churches.

“We are inviting members from all of our partner churches and their friends, as well as those interested in our ministry to attend our luncheon.”

The luncheon and silent auction/raffle begins at noon at the Carson Community Center, Hall C, Three Civic Center, Carson, CA  90745. Guests can visit the display of MMA’s Mobile Medical Clinic and its Optometry Services Van beginning at 11 a.m.

According to Louie Rosado, medical director of Medical Mission Adventures, “Our patients consistently make dental care their most requested service. Recent studies have proved serious medical complications, including heart disease, can result from lack of dental care.

“Our solution is to acquire a 24-foot trailer and install four dental stations complete with the necessary equipment.  Our dental trailer could open within minutes upon arrival at the local clinic site, increasing significantly the number of patients we could treat.”

Volunteer medical, dental and optometrist professionals, along with South Bay church volunteers served  500 patients during its last seven clinics. The clinics started in September 2012.

Rosado and Winfrey said, “Churches tell us their members enjoy volunteering at the clinics. It is an excellent opportunity to share the Gospel and demonstrate to neighbors that Christians care about them.”

Tickets are $45 each and tables of eight are available for $315. RVSP by 11/26/13. Credit card payments are accepted at www.mmadventures.org  Checks should be made payable to Medical Mission Adventures, placing “2013 Luncheon Fundraiser” in the check’s memo line, and send to MMA Fund, 1108 Sartori Ave., Suite 220, Torrance, CA 90501.

70 Patients Treated at Torrance Clinic

MMA’s Mobile Clinic in Torrance

Over 70 people received free medical, dental and optical care in the Los Angeles South Bay area on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Christ Our Savior Anglican Church, in conjunction with Anglican Health Ministries, led a coalition of partners known as theTorrance Outreach for Unified Community Health (TOUCH) to bring Medical Mission Adventures’ (MMA) mobile medical clinic to Torrance, California. The coalition consisted of Christ Our Savior, The Harbor Church, and the Torrance Salvation Army which hosted the first clinic site.

People came long distances to receive care. One man came from the San Gabriel Valley for optical needs and another woman traveled 75 miles from San Bernardino and slept overnight at the Salvation Army to wait for the clinic to open in the morning. Patients were very grateful, and could not believe that clinic services were free.

While comprehensive care was offered, dental and optical needs were the most utilized services.

Volunteers visited with patents, shared the gospel and invited many to church on Sunday. Louie Rosado, executive director of MMA, gave his own Christian testimony to the waiting patients.

Special note should be made of the support of the Salvation Army staff. Pastors Neil and Rubina Navarro opened their entire service center for the clinic. Officers provided  refreshments to the patients and provided valuable administrative and minsterial support.

Anglican Health Ministries worked with MMA for over two years on licensing, regulatory, and insurance requirements. “It was a long-road of red tape and endless inspections, but we were finally able to open the doors,” said physician and Deacon Val W. Finnell, who is Executive Director of Anglican Health Ministries.

Overall, TOUCH Coalition members thought the day was very successful. More work needs to be done to recruit medical, dental and optometry staff in the South Bay to support ongoing local clinics throughout the year.  More TOUCH Coalition members are being sought to support clinic operations.

Patients receive free dental care

Christ Our Savior would like to extend an invitation to other Anglicans within the Diocese of Western Anglicans to partner with them in hosting regular clinics in the South Bay area.  Local clinic volunteers are also desperately needed. Those interested should contact Christ Our Savior Senior Warden, Tom Winfrey, at tawinfrey@yahoo.com.
